God of War is a video game for the PC. As I finished my second game over the holidays, it still felt strange to say that. Another game "of War" for a different master lies not much above it on my Steam library—Gears 5.. It would have been unimaginable only a few years ago for these two tentpole programs to coexist on the same gadget. They now have a virtual shelf to share.

Sony's newest angry dad game is proof that the PC is the ultimate videogame unifier, as well as a good reminder of how the platform can bring out the best in games. I've slaughtered my way through Midgard at 30 fps on a PS4 and 4K on a PS5, but after 24 hours of buttery smooth monster chopping at 90+ fps, I don't believe I'll be able to go back to either. At least on my higher-end PC, this is a fantastic port.

This is the God of War to play if you missed God of War 2018 or haven't played the series at all. All you need to know before you start is that Kratos was Athena's greatest assassin until he was betrayed and determined to kill all the gods (including his daddy, Zeus). The story resumes up years later in this subtle relaunch. Kratos travelled into the Norse nations during this period, where he obtained a wife (who has just died away at the start of the game), a son called Atreus, and a magnificent beard.

It is restrained by God of War. It's a tiny narrative set in a world full of giants. Kratos and Atreus aren't looking to save the world; all they want to do is scatter their wife's ashes on a large mountain. They're not seeking for a battle, but they wind up in a lot since Midgard has reportedly been a nightmare land of nasty trolls, poison witches, and undead for the past century or two. Much of the game is spent navigating this shattered world and uncovering the petty god drama that led to its demise.

There's a lot of The Last of Us and Uncharted in its puzzles—hoisting young Atreus atop a ledge to kick down a rope and shaking crumbling supports to build a bridge are right out of the Naughty Dog playbook—but these old challenges get a lot of fun with Kratos' superhuman power.
